{One: Oh What Fun} First Birthday Party Inspiration

I can’t believe it’s time to start planning the first birthday already! Where did my baby go? Cue the mom tears. Despite being in denial, I’m excited to celebrate our little man as well as our survival of the first year of parenthood! Originally I was all set to do it up big with a theme, but then I got real and decided to just pick a color theme and some patterns to keep it a bit simpler. Since Logan is too little to really be into anything or have a favorite book or character, it just made sense. As you can see I’m going bright and bold with lime green and ombre blues with some modern triangles and fun patterns thrown in there too. What do you think?

Now, my kids/first birthday party experience is very limited, so I really need your advice! We are inviting mostly our close friends and family. I expect some of them will want to get him presents, but I don’t want our friends to feel obligated to get him a present or to think we’re just inviting them for that reason. How do you handle that on the invitation and at the actual party? I also don’t want to make people watch him open presents for an hour (or us open his presents while he plays with paper), so if some people bring gifts will they be upset if we don’t open them? I’m thinking the party will consist of mingling with the main event being a smash cake. What else do you do? Any tips or thoughts are much appreciated!

Cute colors! I think most of your family will want to see your little man open gifts, it is part of the fun! He might not get into it, but seeing how he interacts with paper, bags, bows, and gifts is fun to watch and is a good time for photos :)

  • I love the decorated high chair and the little crown on his head – I can’t wait to see it all come together! xo, biana –BlovedBoston

  • I love those decoration ideas and those cakes! That little crown too, hehehe. :-) I know that whatever you put together it will be super cute and creative. I think that it’s also OK and part of the fun if he opens up at least a few gifts too. :-)

Talk to you soon mama! XOXO

so many cute ideas! i love that cake :) we are going to open gifts after the guests leave so they dont have to sit and watch her do that. xo jillian

  • Love the color theme, such a good idea! The colors you picked are so fun and bright too. As far as gifts go I usually open them at the very end when most people are gone or after people have left. I just find that it can be way too over stimulating to the little one after a party. Plus sometimes people really want your one year old to have a reaction to the gift and well they’re one and unpredictable and might cry! If you have any older kids make sure you have toys/games for them that was my one mistake at Miller’s first birthday and a few of my nieces were bored. You can even just pick up little fun things at the dollar spot at Target. Good luck and can’t wait to see how it turns out!

  • Awe, how time flies! Love the color scheme and inspiration for the party!

  • I love that table with the white ruffles and big balloons! Such pretty color choices! Can’t wait to see how it all comes together!

  • Time flies!! Can’t believe he’s almost one! I’m no help with the party planning unfortunately, but I do love all of your inspiration!

I can’t believe it has already almost been a year! I love the color scheme you picked out and can’t wait to see how it turns out. For my nieces and nephews birthdays it seems like they’ll do the gifts at the end after people have left and then immediate family sticks around to watch them open gifts.

  • well obviously i don’t have a lot of experience either, but the 2 one-year-birthday parties i have been to have been mingling, watching them do the smash cake (both babies cried when everyone sang lol) and opening presents. both babies weren’t really interested in the presents, so the parents did most of the opening, and the babies played with wrapping paper and stuff. oh, and yeah both parents said ‘your presence is present enough!’ and everyone brought presents haha. people like to buy baby gifts!

  • My friend does 1st birthday parties over lunch and does an easy lunch for guests + little ones… and then they just let the little ones play (bounce house?) and do the cake smash. She didn’t open gifts at the party, and I don’t think it bothered anyone. It was actually really fun – and we don’t have a little one. 😉

  • SO CUTE!! I love the colors and can’t wait to see it all come together! We did a color scheme, too, and it was so much easier! For Cam’s birthday, (I think) people liked watching him open gifts! But, for his 2nd and 3rd birthday, the flow of the party was going so well that it would have been awkward to make everyone stop and watch him, so we just didn’t. I didn’t plan it that way, but it worked out fine. You could just play it by ear and see!!
